Hanoi Party Secretary Tran Duc Thang inspects the progress of the West Thang Long Road project in Dong Ngac Ward.
Joining the inspection delegation were Party Central Committee member and Standing Vice Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Trong Dong; Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Truong Viet Dung; along with leaders from municipal departments, agencies and related communes and wards.
The West Thang Long arterial road has a total length of approximately 34.17 kilometers, beginning at Vo Chi Cong Road and ending at National Highway 32, passing through 10 communes and wards. Under the orientation of Hanoi's comprehensive master plan with a 100-year vision, the section outside Ring Road 4 has been adjusted to expand its cross-section from 40 meters to 80 meters.
The current investment structure for the entire route is divided into nine sections, including three already in operation, two under construction, one preparing for groundbreaking and three in the investment preparation stage. To date, approximately 6.08 kilometers of the route have been completed and opened to traffic, while around 9 kilometers are currently under construction.
The project is preparing to begin construction of the 0.92-kilometer West Thang Long-Ring Road 3 underpass in August 2026 while simultaneously preparing investment procedures for the remaining sections.
For the section from Ring Road 3 to Van Tien Dung Road, site clearance has been substantially completed and construction has reached approximately 65% of the total workload.
The section from Ring Road 3.5 to Dan Hoai Canal has completed approximately 95.5% of site clearance and achieved about 20.9% construction progress.
Site clearance is expected to be completed in June 2026, with the project scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Current challenges include the fact that the entire route has not yet been developed as an integrated system and remains divided into multiple sections managed by different investors, reducing overall connectivity efficiency.
The West Lake-Ba Vi corridor is an east-west radial route connecting the central area of the capital with western urban areas, with a total length of 39.43 kilometers crossing 15 communes and wards. The route has been identified as one of the nine major development corridors under Hanoi's comprehensive master plan with a 100-year vision.
According to planning, the route will have a cross-sectional width ranging from 48 to 100 meters, while Urban Railway Line No. 8 is also expected to be incorporated within the route area.
Once completed, the route will connect the city center with the western growth pole, Hoa Lac urban area and Ba Vi National Park.
The route is also expected to become a development corridor for the knowledge economy, science and technology, education and distinctive cultural and landscape spaces linking Thang Long culture with Xu Doai heritage.
At present, no formal investment project has been established for the route. However, approximately 2.54 kilometers are already operational along the existing Hoang Quoc Viet Road.
Around 0.67 kilometers are currently under investment through the extended Hoang Quoc Viet underpass project connecting to Tran Vy Street, while more than 36 kilometers remain undeveloped according to planning.
Regarding the extended Hoang Quoc Viet underpass project, construction is expected to begin on August 19, 2026 and be completed in the second quarter of 2027.
For the section from Ring Road 4 to Ring Road 5, an investor consortium is currently proposing implementation under a public-private partnership model.
The Hanoi Department of Finance is consolidating and finalizing relevant documentation.
