Hanoi has a new mayor

During the third working day of the 28th session of the 16th Hanoi People's Council on the afternoon of November 28, the Hanoi People's Council continued its agenda and carried out personnel procedures under its authority.

The session was attended by Politburo member and Hanoi Party Secretary Nguyen Duy Ngoc; Party Central Committee member and Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Vu Dai Thang; Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Van Phong; Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee and Chairwoman of the Hanoi People's Council Phung Thi Hong Ha; Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Trong Dong; Deputy Head of Hanoi's National Assembly delegation Nguyen Ngoc Tuan; members of the Standing Committee of the Hanoi Party Committee; leaders of the People's Council and People's Committee; and representatives of the Hanoi Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.

Overview of the event. 

From Quang Ninh province, the session was joined by Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Council Trinh Thi Minh Thanh; Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Bui Van Khang; Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Quang Ninh province Vu Quyet Tien; members of the Provincial Party Standing Committee; vice chairpersons of the Provincial People's Council and People's Committee; and members of the Quang Ninh National Assembly delegation.

At the session, the Hanoi People's Council approved the removal of Nguyen Duc Trung from the position of Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee due to health reasons and his personal request.

The Council then elected Vu Dai Thang, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, as Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee for the 16th term, 2021–2026.

Earlier, the Hanoi Party Committee held a conference announcing the Politburo's personnel decision.

Overview of the event. 

According to the Politburo's decision, Vu Dai Thang, member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Quang Ninh Provincial Party Committee, was relieved from his positions in the Executive Committee and Standing Committee of the Quang Ninh Provincial Party Committee and from his post as Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee for the 2025–2030 term. He was reassigned to participate in the Executive Committee and Standing Committee of the Hanoi Party Committee and serve as Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee for the 2025–2030 term.

Thang was born in 1975 in Hanoi. He holds a master's degree in international relations, a bachelor's degree in economics and a bachelor's degree in law. He has a high level of political theory training.

He worked for many years at the Ministry of Planning and Investment and served as Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment. From August 2020 to October 2024, he worked in Quang Binh province as Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee. On October 26, 2024, the Politburo reassigned him to Quang Ninh province to serve as Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee for the 2020–2025 term.

On September 26, at the first meeting of the 16th Executive Committee of the Quang Ninh Provincial Party Committee for the 2025–2030 term, Thang, who was serving as Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee for the 2020–2025 term and Head of the Quang Ninh National Assembly delegation, was once again elected as Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee for the 2025–2030 term.
