According to the plan, IOAA 2026 in Hanoi will host approximately 60–70 international delegations, with a total of around 900–1,000 participants, including students, team leaders, judges, observers, and organizing staff.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 25, 2026, at the National Convention Center in Tu Liem Ward, while the competition events and closing ceremony will be held at Phenikaa University in Duong Noi Ward. In addition to the official competition events, the organizing committee also plans various cultural exchange and sightseeing activities to promote the image of the capital city to international friends.
By hosting IOAA 2026, Hanoi will contribute to implementing Politburo Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in education and training development, particularly in identifying and nurturing students with scientific talent, improving the quality of STEM education, and strengthening international integration in education and training.
The organization of IOAA 2026 will also be linked with the implementation of Politburo Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on the development of science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation, contributing to the identification and development of young scientific talents with outstanding capabilities in astronomy and astrophysics, serving the country's long-term science and technology development strategy.
The event will strengthen academic exchange, scientific exchange, and educational cooperation between Vietnamese students and students from other countries and territories, while promoting Hanoi as a center of education, science, innovation, and international integration in Vietnam.
At the same time, the city has assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to organize communication and promotional activities for the 2026 International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics through mass media and digital platforms; introduce the significance, scale, and activities of the Olympiad; and promote the image of Vietnam and the people of Hanoi to international audiences.
The Department of Education and Training will organize protocol and reception for international delegations attending the Olympiad; support immigration procedures, visas, and related external affairs procedures; arrange interpreters, guides for delegations, and implement external relations activities in accordance with regulations and international practices.
In addition, the city will organize the opening ceremony in a formal manner consistent with IOAA practices and State regulations, combined with the introduction of the culture, history, and image of Hanoi.
The competition events of the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics will be organized to ensure objectivity, fairness, transparency, and compliance with regulations. The organization will follow IOAA regulations, including the development and administration of exam content, grading, result compilation, and related academic activities.
Cultural exchange programs, performances, and tours to historical sites and scenic attractions in Hanoi will also be organized to promote international exchange and showcase the image of Vietnam.
