A world-class "cathedral of the arts"
The Pearl Theater was designed by world-renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century and the first Italian to be listed among Time magazine's 100 most influential people.
Over his six-decade career, he has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Pritzker Prize, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Architecture."
The theater has a total floor area of about 40,980 square meters, nearly six times the size of a standard football field.
It includes two main auditoriums: an opera hall with 1,797 seats and a flexible multi-purpose hall equipped with movable seating that can accommodate 1,430 standing guests and 216 balcony seats for concerts, live performances, and large-scale entertainment events.
Beyond the main halls, the theater features additional multifunctional spaces such as a grand foyer, rehearsal and practice rooms, a museum, and an observation deck.
It is designed to host a wide range of artistic performances, from symphonies, Broadway-style musicals, opera, and ballet to award ceremonies, galas, and international entertainment events.
The theater will also serve as a major venue for cultural exchange and creative recreation for Hanoi residents and visitors alike.
Its most distinctive architectural feature is an extraordinary dome inspired by the rippling waves of West Lake. The ultra-thin, high-strength structure will be coated with a nacre-like finish that reflects the lake's colors as they change throughout the day.

Design of the project.
Built to host world-class performances and welcome globally acclaimed artists, the Pearl Theater aspires to join the ranks of the world's most iconic performance venues in Paris, Milan, Berlin, London, New York, and Los Angeles. It will symbolize Vietnam's cultural connection with the world while presenting the nation's identity and creativity on the global stage.
Elevating Hanoi's cultural stature in a new era
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan noted that throughout history, Hanoi has been the country's political, economic, cultural, and artistic center—a place where national values converge and radiate.
The Party, State, and people of Vietnam have always regarded culture as both a goal and a driving force for development, placing it on equal footing with economic growth and recognizing people as the core of progress.
He explained that under Hanoi's Capital Planning for 2021–2030 with a vision to 2050, and the amended Master Plan to 2045 with a vision to 2065, culture and heritage are identified as one of five key development pillars.
In an era of deep international integration, investing in iconic cultural landmarks holds great significance. It reaffirms the thousand-year-old capital's heritage while promoting an image of Vietnam that is innovative, creative, and committed to sustainable growth.
The Pearl Theater and Thematic Cultural and Art Park, invested by Sun Group, will be developed on a 191,000-square-meter site at the heart of the Quang An Peninsula, with a total investment exceeding VND12 trillion (US$489 million).
The complex will include a modern, multi-functional theater with more than 2,000 seats to host major cultural and political events, and a cultural-art park designed for creative, recreational, and educational purposes—serving as a new destination for both domestic and international tourists.
Vice Chairman Duong Duc Tuan emphasized that this is a community-oriented, non-profit project financed through social resources. Sun Group, one of Vietnam's leading private corporations, has taken the initiative to invest in this ambitious endeavor, reflecting its aspiration to create a modern, internationally recognized cultural complex that represents Vietnam's artistic spirit and architectural innovation.
He added that the project will not only be a landmark of contemporary architecture but also a vibrant hub for creativity, exchange, and cultural connection—where Vietnamese and international art forms meet. It will host large-scale cultural events, contributing to the growth of Hanoi's cultural and tourism industries.
"Every great city in the world has a signature cultural landmark that defines its image," he said. "We believe that when completed, the Pearl Theater and Thematic Cultural and Art Park at Quang An Peninsula will enhance Hanoi's cultural and tourism identity on a global scale. The city is committed to providing full support to ensure the project's timely, high-quality, and safe implementation."
A milestone in cultural vision and national pride
In his address, Politburo Member Nguyen Xuan Thang, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council and President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, emphasized that the construction of the Pearl Theater and Art Park is not only a major cultural undertaking but also a vivid reflection of the Party and State's strategic vision for cultural development.
He stated that the establishment of this complex marks a convergence of global artistic excellence, providing the Vietnamese people with opportunities to experience world-class performances by leading international ensembles.
"We hope this project will pave the way for more Pearl Theaters and modern cultural landmarks, ensuring that Hanoi continues to stand as a capital of heritage, creativity, beauty, and global stature," he said.
