On May 9, Politburo member, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee and Head of the Hanoi National Assembly Delegation Tran Duc Thang conducted an on-site inspection of management, operation, integrated ticketing and exploitation activities on the elevated section of Urban Railway Line 3.1 from Nhon to Cau Giay.
He also paid a visit to check construction activities at underground Station S12 on Line 3.1 under the Hanoi Pilot Urban Railway Project from Nhon to Hanoi Railway Station.
Joining the inspection delegation were Party Central Committee member and Permanent Vice Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Trong Dong; Party Central Committee member, Vice Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee and Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Vu Dai Thang; member of the Standing Board of the Hanoi Party Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Hoan Kiem Ward People's Council Vu Dang Dinh; along with representatives from relevant departments, sectors and local authorities.
According to a report from Hanoi Metro Company Limited, the company is currently operating two urban railway lines.
Specifically, Urban Railway Line 2A Cat Linh-Ha Dong officially began commercial operations on November 6, 2021. The fully elevated line stretches 13.1 kilometers and operates 13 train sets, each with a maximum capacity of 960 passengers.
The Phu Luong Depot covers more than 19.7 hectares and includes 16 facilities serving as train parking areas, the Operations Control Center and offices for operation, maintenance and infrastructure management units.
The city's pilot urban railway project, Metro Line 3 from Nhon to Hanoi Railway Station, has a total length of 12.5 kilometers, including eight elevated stations and four underground stations. The elevated section from Nhon to Cau Giay officially entered commercial operation on August 8, 2024, spanning 8.5 kilometers.
Hanoi Party Secretary Tran Duc Thang (sitting, center) and Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Vu Dai Thang (sitting, first from left) take a trip on the Nhon-Cau Giay metro line.
The line operates 10 train sets, each with a maximum capacity of 946 passengers. The Nhon Depot covers more than 16.7 hectares and functions as a train parking, repair, maintenance, operations control, technology update and personnel workspace center.
As of April 30, 2026, the two urban railway lines had completed more than 493,000 train trips and transported over 62.2 million passengers while maintaining absolute operational safety.
In the first four months of 2026 alone, the two lines transported nearly 6.6 million passengers, reaching 103% of the same period in 2025. Ticket revenue exceeded VND49.7 billion ($1.89 million), an increase of 28% compared with the same period last year.
Passengers can currently use the Hanoi Metro app to book seamless door-to-door journeys, combining Metro and Be transportation services with a single payment.
By the end of June 2026, Hanoi Metro plans to pilot connections between metro services and Tri Nam electric bicycles and electric motorcycles. Specifically, monthly ticket packages will be integrated through the Hanoi Metro app and Tri Nam bicycles.
Passengers will be able to activate Tri Nam electric bicycles or motorcycles through the Hanoi Metro app, travel to stations, take the metro to the nearest station and continue using Tri Nam vehicles to reach final destinations.
In addition, as of March 21, 2026, 100% of passengers have used electronic identification, authentication and biometric recognition solutions on urban railway lines.
Hanoi Party Secretary Tran Duc Thang meets and cherishes workers and engineers on the underground construction site of the Nhon-Hanoi Railway Station metro line.
To date, nearly 8.6 million passenger trips have used the new system, with almost 70% of passengers utilizing electronic identification and biometrics. More than 50% of single-trip ticket users and 94% of monthly pass users have adopted cashless payment methods.
Meanwhile, according to the Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board, the Hanoi Pilot Urban Railway Project from Nhon to Hanoi Railway Station is Hanoi's first underground metro project.
Currently, the elevated section from Nhon to Cau Giay has been completed and placed into operation. The underground section includes four kilometers of tunnels, four underground stations and one emergency exit shaft, all under simultaneous construction, with overall progress reaching 79.3% and generally remaining on schedule.
Tunnel excavation using Tunnel Boring Machines has now been completed while ensuring quality and construction safety.
Tunnel No. 1 completed excavation on December 1, 2025 and disassembly of TBM1 has been completed. Tunnel No. 2 completed excavation on April 13, 2026 and is currently undergoing quality and safety inspections before dismantling TBM2.
Regarding underground station construction, all diaphragm walls, roof slabs and intermediate slabs have been completed. Auxiliary works and bottom slab construction are underway, with progress generally following planned schedules.
Immediately after the completion of tunneling for Metro Line 3, the two Tunnel Boring Machines are expected to undergo maintenance and repairs by Herrenknecht, the TBM manufacturer, for future use on Metro Line 5.
Current underground construction progress generally remains on schedule. Tunnel excavation has been completed, while machine dismantling and auxiliary works are being carried out to hand over construction sites for equipment installation packages beginning in May 2026, alongside completion of station rooms and functional areas.
According to the project schedule, installation of systems and equipment must be completed by April 2027. Testing, system integration, calibration and trial operations are scheduled for completion in December 2027, with commercial operation of the underground section expected to begin the same month.
The metro line connecting Nhon area and Hanoi Railway Station stretches a 12.5-kilometer distance with a 8.5-kilometer elevating section.
During the inspection, Hanoi Party Secretary Tran Duc Thang and the city delegation directly experienced the electronic ticket control system using electronic identification, authentication and biometric recognition technologies while learning about urban railway services on the elevated Nhon-Cau Giay section.
Acknowledging the efforts of Hanoi Metro Company Limited, Thang emphasized the need for a comprehensive assessment of operational effectiveness while studying the development of a sufficiently strong urban railway management and operating model with adequate financial and technical capacity to ensure effective system operation, management and maintenance.
Directly inspecting construction activities at underground Station S12, he instructed the Hanoi People's Committee and related departments and sectors to address difficulties and obstacles so that the Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board and contractors could complete the project on schedule by the end of 2027.
At the Station S12 construction site on the bottom slab level, the Hanoi Party Chief inspected construction progress, visited, presented gifts and encouraged engineers and workers currently laboring at the site.
Later that afternoon, Thang and the city delegation conducted field surveys at several projects around Hoan Kiem Lake.
