Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh on May 8 met the Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to Vietnam, Khamphao Ernthavanh, to discuss bilateral cooperation and support for the Lao Embassy's activities in Hanoi.
Welcoming Ambassador Ernthavanh, Chairman Thanh emphasized the deep and enduring friendship between Vietnam and Laos, and the strong bonds between Hanoi and Vientiane, Luang Prabang and other localities in Laos.
He said that cooperation between Hanoi and Vientiane has become increasingly substantive, with several aid projects funded by Hanoi in Laos being implemented promptly and proving highly effective.
The Hanoi official also highlighted Hanoi's structured and responsive approach to supporting the training of Lao officials.
Chairman Thanh said that Hanoi will continue to expand its scholarship programs for Lao university and postgraduate students, while also promoting vocational training programs for Laos.
Hanoi is currently reviewing and upgrading student accommodation facilities to ensure Lao students and trainees have access to comfortable and convenient living conditions, he added.
Chairman Thanh said that Hanoi is committed and ready to supporting the Lao Embassy and Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh in their activities.
Expressing appreciation for Hanoi's support, Ambassador Khamphao agreed that the bilateral relationship is growing stronger, with frequent and effective exchanges, particularly among high-level delegations.
She expressed admiration for Hanoi's rapid development and highly valued the city's assistance to Vientiane, especially in human resource training.
Looking ahead to several cultural events planned for late 2025, including the Lao Culture Week, Ambassador Ernthavanh asked for Hanoi's continued attention and support, proposing close coordination to ensure the events are successful.
Chairman Thanh welcomed the initiative, and affirmed Hanoi's full support to help ensure these cultural activities run smoothly and achieve the desired impact.
The Lao ambassador also discussed the Lao Embassy's plan to renovate its compound in Hoan Kiem District.
In response, Chairman Thanh tasked the Hanoi Department of Construction to coordinate with relevant agencies and continue working with the Lao side to assess and implement the proposed upgrades.
During the meeting, both sides also exchanged views on several shared concerns, including the financial support mechanism for Lao students studying in Hanoi.
