PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc meets US President Donald Trump (09:54 01/03/2019)

HNP - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had a meeting with US President Donald Trump on February 27th as part of his visit to Viet Nam for the second DPRK-USA Ha Noi Summit.

At the reception, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc welcomed US President Donald Trump and his entourage visiting Viet Nam, and highly appreciated the special significance of the second DPRK-USA Ha Noi Summit in promoting settlement of denuclearization and establishing sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula.

He also lauded the US and the DPRK’s choice of Viet Nam as the venue for their summit.

The Government leader affirmed that in foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multi-lateralization and diversification of foreign relations, and integration into the world on the principle of respecting each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political regimes, Viet Nam has always attached importance to the comprehensive partnership with the US.

For his part, US President Donald Trump expressed his delight at meeting with PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and visiting Viet Nam again.

He thanked Viet Nam for its support for the DPRK - USA Summit despite a short period of time for preparations.

The two sides reviewed and expressed their pleasure at fruitful development of the bilateral relations in various fields, from politics-diplomacy, security-defence, education-training, to the settlement of war consequences. Notably, bilateral trade in 2018 reached over US$ 60 billion, in which, the US’s export to Viet Nam rose by 46%, making Viet Nam as one of the fastest growing markets of the US.

To promote bilateral ties, the two sides agreed to continue carrying out existing cooperation mechanism, such as the Viet Nam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement and the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).

Additionally, the two sides will continue discussing the possibility of upgrading bilateral trade-investment ties to match the development of their economic-trade relations and the nature of the comprehensive partnership.

US President Trump also highly appreciated Viet Nam’s positive settlement of some prioritized trade issues while affirming his strong support for the cooperation in this field for the sake of the two peoples.

The two sides also exchanged their views on a number of regional issues of mutual concern. They voiced their support for the peaceful settlement of disputes in the East Sea in accordance with international laws, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); the full respect for all diplomatic and legal processes; the effective and full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, and the early signing of a Code of Conduct for the East Sea (COC).
