The Hanoi Party chief Vuong Dinh Hue said during the 2016-2019, Hanoi tourism sector has been developing at a rapid rate, however, the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic revealed shortcomings of the sector.
“Without drastic measures, Hanoi tourism sector could face the risk of lagging behind and directly impacts the city’s growth target of 7.5-8% for this year,” stated Hue.
Among major reasons, Hue pointed out the lack of efforts to develop tourism infrastructure, while the majority of tourism companies are of small and micro-sized, resulting in a lack of major firms that act as industry-leading companies.
Moreover, tourism products have not been up to the expectation of tourists.
According to Hue, right before the Covid-19 pandemic, the city’s tourism sectors still recorded a modest growth, while in 2020, the number of international and domestic tourists in Hanoi decreased more than the national average.
Hue requested the municipal Department of Tourism to submit a proposal for the recovery of the tourism sector in 2021, in which mobilizing all resources to attract domestic tourists.
Hue expected the city to stand ready and take the city’s tourism sector to a new level right after the Covid-19 pandemic is contained and all economic activities return to normal.
In 2021, as Hanoi is the host for Sea Games 31st , the Department of Tourism should take advantage of this regional event to organize cultural, art, cuisine and festival activities to attract tourists.
For this year, Hue requested the tourism sector to attain 70% targets of the 2019 level, while continuing to push for tourism to become a spearhead sector in the 2021-25 period and subsequent years.
