Kick-off ceremony starts one-year countdown to 31st SEA Games (14:20 23/11/2020)


HNP - The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with the Hanoi People’s Committee held a kick-off ceremony, marking the one-year countdown to the opening ceremony of the 31st SEA Games and 11th ASEAN Paragames, at the Ly Thai To statue garden on November 21. 



The event saw the attendance of Politburo member Vuong Dinh Hue, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee and Head of the city delegation of National Assembly deputies; Nguyen Ngoc Thien, member of the Party Central Committee (PCC), Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Chu Ngoc Anh, PCC member, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee and Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee; Nguyen Thi Tuyen, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the municipal Party Committee; Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Deputy Secretary of the municipal Party Committee and Standing Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Council; Nguyen Lan Huong, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front’s Hanoi committee; along with representatives from the embassies of 10 Southeast Asian countries, and  nearly 2,000 athletes.

In his remarks, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien, who is the head of the SEA Games 31 organising board, said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam would try its best to prepare and organize a successful SEA Games, thus upholding the spirit of friendship, solidarity and understanding among peoples in the Southeast Asian region.
 
The ceremony is the beginning of Vietnam’s preparation process for one of the region’s largest multi-sporting events, Thien added, asking for more support from government agencies, provinces and cities to successfully organize the Games.

Addressing the event, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Chu Ngoc Anh described SEA Games 31 and ASEAN Para Games 11 as the biggest sporting events in the region. 
 
He said, as the world is facing unprecedented challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, Hanoi along with other provinces and cities has exerted every effort to effectively realize the dual target of both containing the pandemic and boosting economic recovery.
 
Mentioning a series of events which have been organized successfully in Hanoi this year, the city leader emphasized that 2020 is significant year during Hanoi’s preparation process as the host of 31st SEA Games and 11th ASEAN Paragames in 2021.
 
On behalf of the Hanoi leaders, Chairman Chu Ngoc Anh pledged to ensure the successful organization of the Southeast Asian Games and be worthy of Hanoi’s status as a City for Peace. 
 
SEA Games and ASEAN Paragames are held biennially. The 31st SEA Games scheduled to take place from November 21 - December 2, 2021, with competitions in 40 official sports held in Hanoi and surrounding localities, including Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh, Vinh Phuc and Bac Giang.
 
Meanwhile, the 11th Para Games is expected to have 11 sports, including athletics, swimming, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, judo, chess, boccia, tennis, archery, and others. 
 
The official website of 31st SEA Games and 11th ASEAN Para Games, hanoi2021.com, was announced at the ceremony. Accordingly, all the official information about the two Games, hosting venues and competition schedules will be published on the website.
