HNP - Standing Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Van Suu chaired a conference on October 22 to take stock of the emulation movement “Food safety” for the 2016-2020 period, and review the one-year pilot implementation of specialized inspection of food safety in districts, towns and wards, communes and townships of Hanoi.

According to a report  presented by Deputy Director of the Department of Health Tran Van Chung at the conference, over the past five years, Hanoi has set up effective models in food safety management, and made  positive changes in the area.

Since 2016, the city’s task forces have inspected a total of 520,506 facilities, sanctioned food safety violation cases with the total amount of more than VND134.8 billion.

In addition to enhancing inspection and handling of violations, the health sector has implemented two programs to make progress in controlling food safety, including improving the capacity of food safety testing systems, and preventing food poisoning and food-borne diseases.

The report showed that, after one year of piloting specialized inspection on food safety in 30 districts and towns, and 579 communes and wards, Hanoi has attained remarkable achievements.

Particularly, local authorities have checked 8,119 facilities, of these, 2,050 (or 25.2% of the total) have been found to have violated several food hygiene and safety regulations, who were fined a total of more than VND3 billion.

The health official affirmed that the city would continue to develop rapid alert systems on food safety in detecting, investigating, and monitoring the prevention and control of food poisoning and food-borne diseases from cities to communes and wards, contributing to improving the efficiency of food safety management in each locality.

In the time ahead, more effort would be made to enhance inspection, supervision, post-inspection and strict handle organizations and individuals breaking food safety regulations, he added.

Chung emphasized that the emulation movements for the 2021-2025 period would focus on expanding concentrated cultivation areas, boosting co-operation with provinces and cities across the country to accelerate the consumption of safe food, encouraging food processing and trading establishments to apply advanced quality management processes, food production chains and safe food distribution systems.
