Chairman of Vietnam Fatherland Front Tran Thanh Man referred to a statement of State President Nguyen Phu Trong calling for the support for the people in disaster zones, as well as the poor and those underprivileged nationwide.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the Party and the government consider poverty eradication a key mission for sustainable development, adding such act also proves the good tradition of Vietnamese people in helping the poorer.
Over the last ten years, Vietnam has achieved major results in poverty reduction and ensuring social security. During the 2011 - 2015 period, the rate of poverty reduction was 2% per year. In the next five years, the poverty rate was reduced from 9.88% in 2015 to 3.75% in late 2019. The rate is set to come below 3% in 2020, taking Vietnam to be one of the first countries realizing the UN millennium development goals of poverty reduction.
Notably over the past five years, there have been active participation of organizations and individuals across the country in efforts supporting the poor.
PM Phuc said there are always affection, support and sharing for the poor in every corner of the country.
In response to the call of Vietnam Fatherland Front, the public has donated VND2 trillion and helped build 170,000 unity houses, while supporting millions of the poor accessing health care treatment, education, building thousands of schools, health facilities, bridges, among others.
PM Phuc said floods in Vietnam’s central region is causing severe damages on socio-economic infrastructures and plunging many families into poverty. Therefore, support from the community is much-needed in this situation.
Vietnam currently has 1.9 million people unable to work to escape poverty, while the government efforts in poverty eradication has become more difficult at a time of natural disaster.
The PM called for greater support from the community, especially for those in the central area. Throughout this event, nearly VND2.4 trillion has been raised to help the poor.
