Hanoi discusses measures for tourism development (22:18 24/09/2020)

HNP - Hanoi’s Department of Tourism held a forum titled “Building unique and innovative tourism products for tourism development in Hanoi” on September 23 to discuss major measures for the city’s tourism sector to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic and other natural and social changes.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Tourism Tran Trung Hieu said the Covid-19 pandemic has taken heavy toll on the tourism sector of Vietnam, including Hanoi. 
According to Hieu, the capital city attracted just 6.29 million visitors in the first eight months of this year, posting a year-on-year decrease of 67.3%, with international arrivals down 75.6% to just 1.02 million. Revenue from tourism sector totaled VND22.7 trillion, down 65.8% compared to the same period of last year. 
The Hanoi tourism sector has set a target to welcome some 14 million tourists to the city in 2020.
The successful containment of the second outbreak of COVID-19 has provided an opportunity for the local tourism sector to revive and thrive, he said, noting the tourism sector should build tours suitable to the needs of particular groups of travelers. 
At the forum, the delegates discussed measures to develop packages that can adapt to the current crisis. 
Truong Quoc Hung, Head of the UNESCO Hanoi Travel Club, underscored the necessity to strengthen tourism promotion activities.
Nguyen Cong Hoan, General Director of the Flamingo Redtours JSC, said that in addition to discount, local travel companies need to set up trips in unique and creative manner. 
Phung Xuan Khanh from Tien Phong Travel Company agreed with Hoan’s opinions on creating unique tourism products meeting travelers’ needs. 
According to Nguyen Van Tu, Deputy Director of the Center for Scientific and Cultural Activities of Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam, his agency is creating a tourism product using 3D technology to introduce the Temple of Literature. 
He voiced his concern over the sustainability of tour packages as well as on how to design tour packages which are attractive to tourists.
Making conclusion at the forum, Hieu highly spoke of the delegates’ opinions.
The guiding principles for tourism products are unique, attractive and professional, yet they must be sustainable and accountable to the environment and society.
He asked for close coordination among relevant parties in developing high-quality and sustainable tourism.  
Hieu affirmed, in an effort to realize the city’s instruction on boosting economic development and fighting Covid-19, the tourism sector is striving to enhance tourism promotion activities, and create a driving force for growth of the industry.
