Teleconference held to review COVID-19 prevention in Hanoi (19:18 23/02/2020)


HNP - Member of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, Head of the Municipal Steering Committee on prevention and control of acute respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) Nguyen Duc Chung hosted a video meeting on February 21 to review the COVID-19 epidemic prevention work in the capital city, as of 3.00 pm on the same day.

Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee, Standing Vice Head of the Municipal Steering Committee Ngo Van Quy, and leaders of the city’s entities and localities were also in attendance. 

 

According to a report by the Department of Health, as of 3 pm on February 21, a total of 77,729 cases of COVID-19 infection had been recorded worldwide. The global death toll had climbed to 2,247, with 2,336 in mainland China. South Korea has reported a big jump in cases of coronavirus infection with 156 and the first  death. 
 
Vietnam had confirmed 16 cases and 15 people have been cured and been discharged from hospital so far. the country has also reported no new confirmed cases of the new coronavirus since February 13.
 
To date, not a single case of COVID-19 had been detected in Hanoi. 77 people suspected of catching the new coronavirus were confirmed negative with nCoV. Currently, 401 people have been isolated for monitoring in the community and 54 others are under quarantine in the Hanoi Police Hospital.
 
According to Deputy Director of the Health Department Hoang Duc Hanh, Vietnam has put the nCov disease under control; however, the number of COVID-19 infection cases has grown in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. Thus, the health official asked for the city’s strict implementation of stronger measures to prevent the possible spread of the novel coronavirus.
 
In the time ahead, a large number of Chinese workers will return to work in Vietnam and Hanoi, Hanh said, noting that the city authorities should prepare full facilities for monitoring and isolating them.
 
Meanwhile, Director of the Department of Education and Training Chu Xuan Dung said that his department has worked with the Department of Health, localities and schools to take drastic actions to contain the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic. 
 
Moreover, departments of Education and  Training; Health; Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs proposed the Municipal People’s Committee to give students in the capital city another week off by extending their school break through March 2, 2020.
 
Besides, the Department of Education and Training has asked all schools to continue strengthening the epidemic prevention work. 
 
On behalf of the Steering Committee, Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Ngo Van Quy highly appreciated the city’s strict implementation of five measures to combat the COVID-19 epidemic.
 
Early isolation is an important solution, he stated, noted all people coming from epidemic-hit areas must be under quarantine.
 
He asked for strengthening the communication to raise public awareness about the disease prevention.
 
Quy also requested localities and schools to ensure safety when students return to school. 
 
Making conclusion at the meeting, Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung affirmed the evolution of Covid-19 has been complicated.
 
Chung decided to extend school closures until the end of this month while assigning the city’s entities and localities to ensure safety for students to return to school from March. 
 
He asked the Department of Education and Training in collaboration with the Health Department to provide skills to all teachers so that they can early detect suspected students. 
 
The Department of Health is tasked to prepare full medical equipment, update treatment regimens from countries recommended by WHO.
 
Chung also requested the city’s entities to strictly implement the Central level’s instructions on preventing the outbreak of Covid-19.
