Nearly VND900 billion raised for the Fund for the Poor (14:39 19/10/2019)


HNP - The Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee in collaboration with the Central Steering Committee on National Target Programs and Vietnam Television held the annual charity program “Joining hands for the poor 2019” on October 17.

The event saw the attendance of Politburo member, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc; former Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh; Politburo member, Standing member of Party Central Committee's Secretariat Tran Quoc Vuong; Standing member of the Politburo, former Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Pham The Duyet; and Politburo members: Secretary of the Party Central Committee (PCC), Head of the PCC’s Commissions for Communication and Education Vo Van Thuong; PCC Secretary, Head of the PCC’s Commission for Mass Mobilization Truong Quynh Mai; Deputy Prime Minister, Head of the Central Steering Committee on National Target Programs Vuong Dinh Hue; Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh. 
 
Among PCC members attending the event were Chairman of the VFF Central Committee Tran Thanh Man; Head of the PCC’s Commission for Internal Affairs Phan Dinh Trac; Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court of Vietnam Nguyen Hoa Binh; Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Chairman of the PCC’s Theoretical Council Nguyen Xuan Thang. 
 
Chairwoman of the Hanoi Fatherland Front Committee Nguyen Lan Huong was also in attendance. 
 
Speaking at the program, Chairman of the VFF Central Committee Tran Thanh Man affirmed that the Party and State have paid attention to caring for the poor and people in especially difficult circumstances, and attained the remarkable achievements in poverty reduction. 
 
During three years (2017-2019), the fund for the poor raised over VND9.6 trillion. At the program, agencies, enterprises and individuals pledged to donate VND877 billion, in which, Hanoi supported VND5 billion. 
 
VFF Central Committee Chairman Tran Thanh Man called on all levels, sectors, businesses, international organizations, and individuals both inside and outside the country to provide support to the poor.
 
The fund will be used to finance the construction of 1,000 houses for poor people in a number of localities in border and mountainous areas and areas prone to natural disasters, Man said. 
 
Addressing the event, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc highlighted the program’s significance, and affirmed that the Party and State have always placed economic development in close connection with poverty reduction and social security.

An estimated 20% of the State budget is earmarked for  programs and projects aimed at reducing poverty.
 
Since 2000, the National Fund for the Poor and social welfare programs raised over VND55 trillion, which were used to finance the construction of  1.5 million charity houses, and aid dozens of millions of poor people in terms of production capital and materials, healthcare services, among others.
 
Hanoi donates VND5 billion to the fund for the poor.
 
The PM emphasized that the Government will continue to effectively implement the National Target Program on sustainable poverty reduction and new style rural area building so as to improve poor people’s living standards.
 
He called on the whole nation to join hands for the poor to help them escape poverty ensuring no one is left behind. 
 
As part of the program, donors were encouraged to send a  SMS  to the number 1408 and make a donation worth VND20,000 to the Fund.
 
The annual program is also held to honor local and international individuals and organizations which have supported needy people and joined charitable activities and contributed to the Fund for the Poor.
