Vietnam Fatherland Front's Hanoi chapter launches “Month for the Poor” in 2019 (09:52 17/10/2019)

HNP - The Vietnam Fatherland Front's Hanoi chapter launched the “Month for the Poor” in 2019 and appealed  supports for the Fund for the Poor on October 15.

At the launching ceremony.

Over the past few years, Hanoi has stepped up effort in implementing social policies, ensuring social welfare in general and poverty reduction in particular.
In 2018, the city supported the poor in repairing and constructing 4,166 houses worth VND423.5 billion (US$18.29 million). This year, Hanoi People’s Council issued resolution No.4 stipulating policies supporting poor households and those having escaped poverty to find jobs.
In addition to polices supporting poverty reduction effort, the Fund for the Poor in various levels helped provide thousands of houses for the poor, as well as instruments and capital for them to start businesses and earn stable income .
The Fund for the Poor in 2018 and in the first nine months of 2019 raised over VND80 billion (US$3.45 million), helped build and repair over 2,000 houses worth nearly VND8 million (US$345,000); providing breeds, capital and production instruments for over 5,000 households worth VND6 billion (US$260,000); providing treatment for 3,000 households worth VND3 billion (US$130,000); helping 13,000 children go to school with a sum of VND5 billion (US$216,000).
These efforts helped to reduce the poverty rate in Hanoi to 1.16%, exceeding the target set by Hanoi People’s Council two years in advance.
Statistics by the end of 2018 showed Hanoi still has 23,289 poor households and 40,727 near-poor households, in which 1,000 households are facing difficulties in getting a house or living in  houses which are in needed of reparation; over 9,000 households  need monthly financial support; over 2,000 without production instruments; over 8,000 looking for financial supports for health treatment, among others.
As a result, in order for Hanoi to reach the target of eradicating poverty by 2020, more practical policies and supports are needed from the public, enterprises and government agencies.
In order for the “Month for the Poor” to be effective, Chairwoman of the municipal Vietnamese Fatherland Front Nguyen Lan Huong requested related parties to promote supports from the society for the Fund for the Poor, aiming to complete or even exceed the target set for capital mobilization of the Fund; encouraging organizations, departments and enterprises to focus on social responsibilities, helping poor households escape poverty and developing modernized farming; gathering information  related to poor households and near-poor households, or those needy people, so that a plan is set up to help them efficiently.
Right after the launch, the Fund received a total of VND7 billion (US$302,000). On this occasion, the Committee operating the fund sent financial support to ten  poor households, to support  their efforts of escaping poverty. These included building houses for three households in My Duc district, each with value of VND50 million (US$2,300); providing cows for three households in Dong Anh district worth VND15 million each (US$650); providing motorbikes for two households in Thanh Tri district worth VND15 million each (US$650); Social fund “Green journey” supported the construction of houses for two households in Chuong My with value of VND50 million each (US$2,300).
