In attendance were Permanent Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Council Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, and Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Ngo Van Quy.
Giving a report at the working session, Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Vu Dang Dinh said that in the first half of 2019, the department has comprehensively rolled out all tasks, and gained remarkable achievements.
In realizing guiding documents of the Central level and the Municipal Party Committee, since the beginning of the year, the department has advised the city on organizing delegations headed by the city leaders to visit and work with cities and localities across the globe, contributing to reinforcing the relations, introducing the city’s cooperation potentials, investment promotion, sharing experiences in fields of urban management, smart city building, hi-tech agriculture, health and education among others, and promoting practical cooperative programs.
The department has also welcomed 81 international delegations while tightening the cooperation with relevant units to complete all preparations for hosting nine senior level delegations paying official visits to Vietnam.
The department, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant units, has fulfilled all tasks of hosting the 2019 North Korea–United States Hanoi Summit.
In the first half of the year, Hanoi attracted US$5.3 billion worth of foreign direct investment (FDI), becoming the leading city nationwide in FDI attraction. Export turnover reached over US$7.2 billion, up 5.4% year on year. The number of international visitors to Hanoi was estimated at more than 2,200 million, posting a year on year increase of 4.6%.
Additionally, external cultural activities have been enhanced. Hanoi hosted many major cultural and art events, namely, Japan Cherry Blossom Festival 2019, Bulgarian Rose Festival 2019, Singapore Festival 2019, among others.
Notably, the department served as an advisory body in signing a memorandum of understanding with the US Cable News Network (CNN) for promoting the images of Hanoi on CNN.
Beside the achievements, Director Vu Dang Dinh pointed out several shortcomings and weaknesses in fulfilling the tasks in the first half of the year.
He took the occasion to propose the Municipal Party Committee to assign the Commission for Organization in collaboration with the department to thoroughly study and adjust Decision No. 1542-QD/TU dated December 7, 2016 of the Municipal Party Committee.
The city government should pay more attention to civil servants in charge of foreign affairs, he suggested.
Making conclusion at the session, Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai appreciated the outcomes by the Department of Foreign Affairs in the first half of the year, contributing to improving the role and status of the capital city.
Regarding key missions in the time to come, the Secretary asked the department to bring into full play the unity, enhance training of human resources, and boost stronger ties with other departments and sector in building data to serve the work of foreign affairs.
Especially, he requested all officials and civil servants to strictly execute the two codes of conducts issued by the city.
Stressing that many important external events will take place in 2020, Secretary Hoang Trung Hai urged the department to proactively elaborate concrete plans for implementation, and standardize regulations and processes in an effort to improve the quality of foreign affairs.
