Hanoi Party chief urges to balance between urban development and ensuring social welfare (21:53 08/03/2021)
At the meeting, Chairman of Gia Lam district People’s Council Nguyen Tien Viet said in 2020, the district had successfully realized the dual target of both containing the pandemic and boosting economic recovery.
Specifically, the district completed and exceeded all the 17 socio-economic development targets, while production value of major economic sectors grew by 8.67%, and state budget revenue of VND4.5 trillion, 52.3% above the estimate.
In the first two months of 2021, Gia Lam district’s budget revenue hit VND375 billion, or 15.2% of the estimate.
At present, the district has two communes qualified as advanced new-style rural areas, two under review, and one is applying for the recognition.
In order for Gia Lam to realize its goal of becoming a downtown district by 2023, the local authorities suggested the city to focus on five fields, including planning, investment, urban management, deregulation in state management, and issues related to administrative boundary.

Regarding the planning process, Gia Lam district suggested Hanoi to speed up the adjustment of planning process for districts such as Dong Anh, Gia Lam, Yen Vien and Long Bien.
Meanwhile, the local authorities expect to carry out a number of major transport and infrastructure, including the construction of two school at Yen Vien and Duong Xa communes worth a combined of VND162 billion; four projects to upgrade the local police station worth VND197 billion, and the expansion of Gia Lam district hospital with 200 beds.
Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Vuong Dinh Hue highlighted the efforts of Gia Lam over the years, expecting it to soon become an urban district by 2023.
Given the rapid urbanization rate, Gia Lam should ensure the balance between the living environment of the people and urban development, Hue stressed.
According to Hue, Gia Lam should consider the development of night market, shopping malls and industrial sectors to promote urban economy.
