HNP - The weekend pedestrian streets surrounding the 200-year-old citadel in Son Tay town, Hanoi have become a new tourist attraction spot.

Pedestrian streets at Son Tay ancient citadel are opened at the weekend.

Nguyen Dang Thao, head of Duong Lam Ancient Village’s management board said since the opening on April 30, over 90,000 visitors have come to the walking space, averaging 10,000-15,000 a week.

In the first  week alone, the space attracted over 35,000 visitors, and around 25,000 in the last weekend.

“The number of visitors to the pedestrian streets have been increasing over the time, which is an encouraging sign. The organizers would continue to offer new cultural events to attract more people  and promote tourism development,” he said.

According to Thao, there had been over 100 cultural, sport and musical events at eight main stages and the surrounding areas in the walking space.

All events are designed to match different age groups, from children to elderly people, including the dancing, chess competition, welcoming SEA Games 31, and so on.

The pedestrian streets would be a highlight of the Son Tay - Xu Doan 2022 Tourism year.

Secretary of the Party Committee of Son Tay Town Tran Anh Tuan said the local authorities have been taking measures to utilize the locality advantages in natural conditions, socio-culture and human resources for socio-economic development.

“The pedestrian streets in Son Tay ancient citadel is one of the four walking spaces in Hanoi, which is aimed at promoting a new cultural space for the public around the 200-year-old citadel,” Tuan said, expecting more tourists would come to Son Tay town during the weekend.

To further attract tourists to the pedestrian streets, Thao said the organizers are planning for more entertainment activities, including a boat race in the moat around the ancient citadel in July, along with promotion of cultural values from different ethnic groups.

The Duong Lam Ancient Village’s management board also considered the pedestrian streets as the highlight of the Son Tay - Xu Doai 2022 Tourism Year, seen as the platform to further realize the town’s potential for development.

Tourism sites such as Son Tay ancient citadel, Va temple, Mia temple, Duong Lam ancient village, among others, would be among Hanoi's key attraction spots for tourists.

With a total length of 820m and a usable area of 34,500 square meters, it extends from Pho Duc Chinh street to the Quang Trung-Nguyen Thai Hoc intersection. The street is closed to traffic from 7pm on Saturdays to 12pm on Sundays, with the main activities including sports, art, and food.
