Earth Hour 2017 helps Viet Nam save 471,000 kWh of electricity (22:06 27/03/2017)


HNP – Ha Noi and 62 cities and provinces nationwide simultaneously switched the lights off for one hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm in response to the 2017 Earth Hour Campaign with the message “Lights off to turn on the future” on March 25. Viet Nam saved 471,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to VND 764 million during the event.

In Ha Noi, the event saw the attendance of Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh; Vice Chairman of the Ha Noi People's Committee Nguyen Doan Toan; ambassadors of this year campaign and tens of thousands of students and local people.

Addressing the launching ceremony in Ha Noi, Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh said that Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and 60 provinces and cities nationwide has hosted a series of diverse and meaningful activities in responding this year’s campaign.

“Response to the Earth Hour 2017 campaign, Viet Nam affirmed its efforts to protecting the environment, as well as saving and effectively using current and future energy sources, while affirming its desire to build a green economy towards sustainable development,” he added.

He also called for all individuals, organizations, households and businesses to participate in the programs responding to Earth Hour 2017 with simple action, such as turning off unnecessary lights and electrical equipments in response to environmental protection and dealing with the impact of climate change.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Ha Noi Municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Doan Toan called on the business community, organizations and individuals in Ha Noi to further participate in the campaign and continue to make practical actions, which will contribute to promoting the  beautiful images of Ha Noi to local people and international friends.

According to National Electricity Moderation Centre, the country saved 471,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, equivalent to VND764 million. In last year’s event, the country saved 451,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to VND 731.544 million.

Earth Hour was first organized in Ha Noi in 2009. The global Earth Hour campaign is the world’s largest grass-roots environmental movement towards action on climatic change. The campaign has received responses from over 7,000 cities in 172 countries. The campaign includes a simple yet significant action: switching off lights for one hour between 8.30pm and 9.30 pm every year in March.
