Hanoi urges for action against drunk driving (14:59 13/05/2019)


HNP - The National Committee for Traffic Safety in collaboration with the Hanoi People’s Committee on May 12 held a parade to call for action against drunk driving.

The event saw the attendance of Truong Hoa Binh, Politburo member, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety; Nguyen Van The, member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Transport; Nguyen Duc Chung, member of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee; Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Council.

 

Addressing the event, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, who is also Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety, emphasized that the Party and State of Vietnam regard traffic safety and order as one of the important tasks in ensuring political security, order, safety and social welfare.

He said that, since 2012, with the participation of the entire political system as well as the support from people, traffic accidents had decreased in terms of the number of cases, fatalities and injured victims. The death caused by traffic accidents decreased from nearly 12,000 in 2012 to more than 8,000 in 2018.

According to the Permanent Deputy PM, that figure shows that traffic accidents, on average, still claim the lives of 21 people and injure 40 others each day.

He said that Vietnam has strictly prohibited and severely handled drivers whose alcohol concentration in their blood or breath exceeds permitted levels.

“However, we have still witnessed serious traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers”, he stressed, and calling for all Vietnamese people and international friends in Vietnam to take actions against drunk driving.

Permanent Deputy PM Truong Hoa Binh requested functional forces to increase patrols to detect violators and strictly fine them, which aims to protect drunk drivers and the community as a whole.

He also affirmed that the National Assembly, Government and ministries will add stricter penalties to punish alcohol related offenses.

 


Addressing the event, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said that, over the past time, the city has drastically taken measures to reduce traffic accidents as well as traffic congestion, especially during holidays, festivals and events in the city.

The number of traffic accident cases, deaths, and injuries decreased in 2018 and the first four months of 2019, but the problem remains a headache, he added.

The city leader asked departments, sectors, agencies, political and social organization and all-level authorities take actions to ensure traffic safety and order as well as to reduce the number of traffic accidents in the city.

He assigned the Municipal Police to take prime responsibility and work with relevant agencies to strictly punish alcohol related offenses.

Departments, sectors and district/township People’s Committee are in charge of taking various measures in effort to fulfill the target of reducing the number of traffic accidents, deaths and injuries by 5-10%.
