“Hanoi - City for Peace”: Building a creative, smart, green, clean and beautiful city (10:06 15/07/2019)


HNP - As part of activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hanoi’s recognition as City for Peace,  the Municipal People’s Committee organized a conference themed “Hanoi - City for Peace, 20 years of integration and development” on July 13.

Among senior officials attended the conference, there werePresident of the Fatherland Front Committee of Hanoi and President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) Nguyen Lan Huong, Head of the Hanoi Mass Mobilization Commission of Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Thi Tuyen, Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Ngo Van Quy, Head of UNESCO Representative Office in Vietnam Michael Croft, representatives of central Government’s bodies and ministries, Hanoi authorities, embassies in Vietnam and friendship organizations, as well as cultural, historical researchers and scientists.
 
According to President of the Fatherland Front Committee of Hanoi and President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO)  Nguyen Lan Huong, Hanoi was recognized as the City for Peace on July 16, 1999 in La Paz, capital city of Bolivia by UNESCO thanks to its significant achievements in the process of innovation, as well as the Vietnamese people’s aspiration for peace. So far, Hanoi has been the only capital city in the Asia - Pacific region awarded this valuable title. This is a honor and also a great challenge for the city; Hanoi shall constantly strive for peace as a solid foundation for development, prosperity and integration.

The conference focused on city’s success over the past 20 years analyzing the following criteria: equality in the community; urban construction; protecting the living environment; promoting cultural development - education, and education for citizens and young generation. This is also an opportunity to broadcast the image of Hanoi culture and people, boost their pride of the city, and call on them to build, protect and promote value of the title together, thus striving for a peaceful, prosperous and happy world.

12 papers were presented by managers, scientists, researchers, diplomats and people from all walks of lives at the conference. Generally, they highly appreciated Hanoi’s efforts to maintain the criteria according to UNESCO’s requirements. The title “City for Peace” has served as motivation to help Hanoi develop, bring value of the heritage into full play and build the city’s own symbols.

According to Head of UNESCO Representative Office in Vietnam Michael Croft, Hanoi becomes an active and dynamic capital, and participates more and more in regional and international cooperation. The city is proud of its past, and meanwhile takes further effort for future development, such as joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).

For their parts, other Vietnamese and foreign participants shared their opinions and solutions to deal with urbanization problems and social issues and improve life of the people. They also introduced Hanoi culture and people, inspire the local, and call on them to joinhands for building, protecting and promoting value of the title, thus building a creative, smart, green, clean and beautiful city.
