Hanoi marks 20th years of recognition as City for Peace (10:06 15/07/2019)


HNP - A ceremony was organized on July 13 at Ly Thai To Park by the Hanoi People’s Committee to celebrate 20th anniversary of Hanoi’s recognition as City for Peace by UNESCO on July 16, 1999.

Senior officials of the city were present, including Secretary of the Municipal People’s Committee Hoang Trung Hai, Permanent Vice Secretary of Ha Noi Party Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairwoman of the People’s Council Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, and Head of the Fatherland Front Committee of Hanoi and President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) Nguyen Lan Huong.

 

The ceremony also welcomed guests, such as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO Le Hoai Nam, UNESCO’s Assistant Director General for External Relations Firmin Edouard Matoko, Head of UNESCO Representative Office in Vietnam Michael Croft, representatives of Central and Hanoi authorities, and people from all walks of life.

Hanoi is proud of the title City for Peace

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung emphasized that Hanoi was recognized as the City for Peace on July 16, 1999 in La Paz, capital city of Bolivia by UNESCO, thanks to its contribution in the fight for peace, development and construction: a traditional yet dynamic city with strong impetus, a political, administrative center and  hub of culture, science, education, economy and international exchanges.

Hanoi is one of the five significant cities worldwide, and the only representative of the Asia-Pacific region to receive the title City for Peace.


It contributes to improving the role of Vietnam in general and Hanoi in particular in international stage, and broadcast the image of Vietnamese people to international friends.


It also inspires the locals, call on them to join hands for a beautiful, civilized and modern city and country.

Over the past 20 years, Hanoi Party Committee, government and people have been striving for building  a peaceful city, contributing to the world’s peace creating  and solid basis for further growth.

After extending administrative boundaries, the city becomes larger with bigger population and diverse culture. However, the city has managed to maintain economic growth in all; investment and business environment have been improved; national defense and security have been maintained, while external affairs are promoted.


The image of Hanoi as a safe and  friendly destination has been spread widely, and highly appreciated by international organizations.

Nguyen Duc Chung asserted that Hanoi is always proud of the title City for Peace, and strives to overcome challenges as well as difficulties for further development and broader integration. The city submits application for joining UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which expects to help Hanoi in brand positioning, image promotion and joining the group of developing cities towards innovation.

Hanoi is eligible to be a creative city


According to UNESCO’s Assistant Director General for External Relations Firmin Edouard Matoko, UNESCO highly appreciated Hanoi’s vision. This is not only an open city with big population but also the capital city of a modern, young, self-confident and responsible Vietnam, which actively integrate into regional, international cooperation.

He believed that Hanoi is eligible to become a creative hub. UNESCO will take further cooperation with the city to promote and preserve history, and develop new cultural industries for a new era. It will help Hanoi maintain the growth sustainably, attract talent, offer jobs to the youth and build a creative city.

On this occasion, the officials pressed the button to inaugurate website “Hanoi - Creative City”.
