Ha Noi has the second largest population throughout the country (after Ho Chi Minh City) with about 7,657,374 inhabitants, accounting for 8% of the total population. In 2017, the number of births was 117,078 children; the fertility rate reached 15.3%, posting a year on year decrease of 0.4%; the total number of 3rd child was 7,788 ones, reaching 6.7%, down 0.1% compared to last year; birth sex ratio was 113.5 boys to every 100 girls; 74% of pregnant women implemented prenatal screening; etc.
Over the past year, the population – family planning sector has effectively implemented specialized activities; launched two campaigns in districts, suburban districts and towns.
The sector has also enhanced the popularization on improving the quality of population; coordinated with press agencies of the Central and the capital city to broadcast thematic reportages and release of communication products; opened training courses to improve staffs’ professional knowledge and skills.

Addressing the event, Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Ngo Van Quy said that in 2017, all targets of the population plan were fulfilled. He also pointed out some shortcomings and weaknesses in the population – family planning task.
To complete goals and targets for 2018 and the 2016-2020 period, contributing to fulfilling missions of the Capital’s socio – economic development, the Vice Chairman asked the Steering Committee, Department of Health, Sub-Department of Population – Family Planning and officials, collaborators to maintain the gained achievements and strive to complete the tasks of the population – family planning work.
He suggested that relevant units should strengthen and innovate communication and education of laws, population policies; deploy the project on prenatal screening, plans and programs on control of sex imbalance at birth of the Municipal People’s Committee. The city official asked districts, suburban districts to ensure funds for the population – family planning in accordance with Resolution 15/2016/NQ-HDND dated December 6, 2016 of the Municipal People’s Council, etc.
At the conference, many collectives and individuals received certificates of merit of the Ministry of Health and the Ha Noi People’s Committee. The Sub-Department of Population – Family Planning presented prizes to winners of the population – family planning contest.
